MARTHA

Hi! I’m Martha.

I was born and raised in Mexico City. I have also lived in Germany (Boppard, Reutlingen and Duesseldorf) and in Ireland (Trim and Dublin). I currently live with my family in Massachusetts, USA.

At 6 years old, my earliest memory of papier-mâché, is making a Mother’s Day gift for my mom. It was a small red rose with a dark green stem. It was imperfect and even somewhat crooked, but was made with tiny hands full of love. Throughout my childhood I created other meaningful papier-mâché and cartonnage pieces. However it took more than a decade from the small red rose until I attempted a bigger project.

In 1994, I created a pair of “Novios Catrines” with recycled materials. It was a birthday present for my father who instilled in me the love for Dia de los Muertos. I proudly place them on my ofrenda every November.

I studied Chemical Engineering in Mexico City and worked there for a couple of years focusing solely on my career. In the early 2000’s, I did my postgraduate degree in Germany. There I was greatly influenced by the Christmas markets and all the wonderful people I met along the way. One of them was an irishman, Dave ~ now my husband.

Although I vowed to return to Mexico after my graduation, love would take me to Ireland.

Appreciation for Irish Folk Tales, Celtic knots, green pastures and its people has only grown stronger over time. So much so, that I am now an Irish citizen. Dave and I welcomed our daughter in the heart of Dublin. Four years later, after moving to Germany, we welcomed our son.

Now in the wonderful Northeast of the USA, I enjoy the ups and downs of being a stay-at-home mother, but…..the creative calling is back!

My creations are a fusion of Mexican and Irish art. Cartoneria, alebrijes, Celtic knots, iluminated lettering, Hispanic and Celtic tales are an endless source of inspiration.
